What are Stellest lenses?

Your child’s eye doctor has determined that your child is a candidate for Essilor® Stellest® lenses. Stellest lenses are the newest generation of myopia-controlling spectacle lenses that have been proven to potentially slow nearsightedness (myopia) progression in children.

The Essilor® Stellest® lens is designed with Highly Aspherical Lenslet Target ("H.A.L.T.") technology. Let’s explore the details of this innovative new spectacle lens for myopia control.

How does the lens work?

The image is a schematic to illustrate the Essilor® Stellest® lens. The Essilor® Stellest® spectacle lens is designed to do two things at the same time:

1. Give your child clear vision – just like regular glasses – with a clear center zone

2. Help slow down worsening nearsightedness (myopia)

They do this by sending two different “signals” to the eye:

• One signal focuses light directly on the retina so your child can see clearly

• The other gently spreads some light slightly in front of the retina. This acts as a signal to the eye to slow down its growth which is what helps keep nearsightedness from progressing as quickly.

Instead of using just one extra focusing power (like traditional designs) these lenses create a soft spread of light across the eye. This approach is designed to give a stronger signal to help control eye growth over time. In the image below, this illustrates the soft spread of light across the eye:

How well does Essilor® Stellest® lens slow myopia progression?

Data from a two-year clinical study was published in March 2022. In the study, children aged 8-13 years with myopia were randomized into different lens prescriptions, one of which was Stellest lenses. After two years, Stellest slowed myopia progression by about 67% on average compared to single vision lenses when worn at least 12 hours a day. This was the result after only two years of full-time wear!

The bottom line: Wearing time matters!

Full-time wear is of utmost importance if we are going to maximize treatment outcomes with the Essilor® Stellest® lens. If we want to achieve the strongest myopia control results for your child, we need to encourage and reinforce the importance of full-time wear: at least 12 hours per day, every day.

How much will it cost?

Stellest lens pricing is standardized; however, your out-of-pocket cost may vary based on several factors. Because this is a new technology, Stellest lenses are not currently included in the VSP formulary. Please contact our office for detailed pricing information.
